KAM.14
Tis indeed true that the ittsy power supply that comes with the KAM does'nt
quite have the oomph to run the KAM, but a bit of a warning on using the HF
rig main supply. (For those of you running 20-50 Amp DC supplies) Some of the
HF rigs have strange methods of connecting the -12v leg to the real ground
withing the radio. as a result, you get an offset voltage between the -12v
terminal on the supply (ie the KAM return) and the Mic Ground at the radio.
This results in some very strange sounding noise, and in some cases will be
bad enough to make HF packet all but unusable. a quick way to check for this
type of problem is to switch the rig to vox on, and turn up the mic gain all
the way. you should be able to go all the way up with no power out. if the
rig comes on at say the 9-10 o'clock position, you have a noise problem. And
about the only cure you'll get is to use a seperate DC supply for the KAM.
I'v you get one of those "battery eliminator" supplies rated at 12 @ 1 amp,
that will work fine. Just add some more capacitance across the output.
Hope this clears up some of the "unexplained" noise and things that go bump in
the night with the KAM. (and other TNC's)
